In My Naivete

Jeseppi Trade Wildfeather
10/6/97

in my naivete
you seemed so kind
in my naivete
seemed to have an open mind
too quick to judge
hell bent to hold a grudge
there ain’t no mercy in the heart of man

in my naivete
something i felt was true
in my naivete
superficially in me and you
little more than talk
on a warm sunday afternoon walk
when the north winds blew
couldn’t even find a safe place to stand

a young preacher once told me
we’re all righteous in our own eyes
we justify ourselves
at our neighbor’s sad demise
we build tall granite towers
on piles of ancient lies
claiming that god is on our side

in my naivete
trusted in your heart
in my naivete
hoped you would make it from the start
when my life had turned
you tried me like a witch to be burned
go ‘head ignite your cross
i ain't gonna wear your brand

a young prophet once said
she had always been disdained
in the town she was born
in the places she was trained
ain’t no use talkin'’
ain’t no use getin'’ drained
when you speak
they all run and hide

in my naivete
sat in my car and cried
in my naivete
my life force nearly up and died
too many burdens and cares
hostile painted faces and glares
yeah everybody loves
but there ain’t one kind word
in the land

a young hooker once advised me
why not let it pass
c’mon let’s blow a little dew
then let’s lie down in the grass
you don’ t have to crawl
on no mo’ broken glass
jus' take your little bottleneck
and let it slide

in my naivete
eyes open wide
