The Road

Jeseppi Trade Wildfeather © 8/13/99

how many times
will you turn away
down a dark street
wet with tears
how may times
can you acquiesce
to all your passions and your fears

soft evening light
in the heart of town
on glossy roads
smoke trails glow
once knew a mojoman
who disappeared
into a vapor from below

where does it take you
where does it lead
are there signposts i can read
she said it turns right into paradise
soon as it passes through her creed

nah nah nah nah
nah nah nah nah nah
nah nah nah nah nah nah nah [repeat]

some roads are narrow
some are broad
some take you
where they bleach your bones
he sold his music
for a pint of stout
somewhere down the road
of sad blue tones

where did it start
where does it end
what is coming round the bend
i see no future in lonely roads
in fantasies we pretend

nah nah nah ...

some lead to calvary
some to rome
some to moslems
christians and jews
some end in college towns
a new elite
has given buddha rave reviews

eight lane highways
bleeding arteries
gridlocked in hopeless deep despair
cannot traverse beyond this road we’re on
can’t pay the toll
don’t have the fare

nah nah nah

Nothing Sacred But Love

Jeseppi Trade Wildfeather
4/21/00

no idea why the sun keeps shining
why the sky is filled with lights
lost in a memory
moon keeps glowing
on deserts darkest nights

what do you hide
in your marble mosque
beneath your ebony gilded leaf
who do you worship
said an arab priest
to a left handed thief

nothing sacred but love
nothing sacred but love baby [repeat]

she once heard
the voice of jesus
through smiling buddhas in each ear
she got caught
in a sandstorm
as she chanted
beneath two camels
filled with fear

she was an animal
she was abused
six thousand years
worshiped a calf
castrated hope
her mateless eyes
filled with tears

nothing sacred but love
nothing sacred but love baby [repeat]

holy mountains
piles of rubble
famous wells bittersweet
lie in places
he once walked about
where vultures come to eat

the ancients saw him
heard the voice
incense carried in a breeze
where princes battle
he once stood
between two elemental trees

nothing sacred but love
nothing sacred but love baby [repeat]

In The Corners of My Mind

Jeseppi Trade Wildfeather
9/26/00

in the corners of my mind
i have found a place to hide
underneath the outer veil
in vital spaces deep and wide

sacred temple soft and frail
where inner light clouds the sun
immortal words caress my ear
angel’s improv just begun

hallowed faces in my eye
what is really left to find
how many mountains must i climb
in the corners of my mind

rooms filled with smoke and fear
where passion wars with those resigned
drunk thoughts i often think
tearful better left behind

in the tavern where i drink
a shot of dreams come an gone
quiet morning crawls the sky
i think it’s time i’m movin on

hallowed faces in my eye
what is really left to find
how many mountains must i climb
in the corners of my mind

In My Naivete

Jeseppi Trade Wildfeather
10/6/97

in my naivete
you seemed so kind
in my naivete
seemed to have an open mind
too quick to judge
hell bent to hold a grudge
there ain’t no mercy in the heart of man

in my naivete
something i felt was true
in my naivete
superficially in me and you
little more than talk
on a warm sunday afternoon walk
when the north winds blew
couldn’t even find a safe place to stand

a young preacher once told me
we’re all righteous in our own eyes
we justify ourselves
at our neighbor’s sad demise
we build tall granite towers
on piles of ancient lies
claiming that god is on our side

in my naivete
trusted in your heart
in my naivete
hoped you would make it from the start
when my life had turned
you tried me like a witch to be burned
go ‘head ignite your cross
i ain't gonna wear your brand

a young prophet once said
she had always been disdained
in the town she was born
in the places she was trained
ain’t no use talkin'’
ain’t no use getin'’ drained
when you speak
they all run and hide

in my naivete
sat in my car and cried
in my naivete
my life force nearly up and died
too many burdens and cares
hostile painted faces and glares
yeah everybody loves
but there ain’t one kind word
in the land

a young hooker once advised me
why not let it pass
c’mon let’s blow a little dew
then let’s lie down in the grass
you don’ t have to crawl
on no mo’ broken glass
jus' take your little bottleneck
and let it slide

in my naivete
eyes open wide
